Preserving and renovating existing residential buildings and adapting them to meet changing requirements in terms of living comfort, functionality and energy efficiency is more relevant today than ever before: investing in existing buildings not only makes economic sense but is also more sustainable and conserves resources than new buildings. Old houses can score points with their location in established surroundings and infrastructure and often have an unmistakable charm. With its traditional competition, the architecture and design magazine HÄUSER wants to show how adaptable and capable the development in existing buildings can be and invites architects to submit entries. The motto for the HÄUSER-AWARD 2026 is “New perspectives. The best remodels”.
Anne Zuber, Editor-in-Chief of HÄUSER: “With our competition, we are looking for exemplary solutions that make the most of existing buildings with intelligent planning and creative concepts. Whether conversions, extensions, additions, loft conversions, or modernisations, whether cautious interventions or radical transformations: The awards recognise outstandingly designed houses that combine the special qualities of an old building with the advantages of contemporary architecture!”
The internationally renowned, annual HÄUSER-AWARD architecture prize is now in its 23rd year. Architects from all over Europe are eligible to take part. The HÄUSER editorial team presents the award together with Bund Deutscher Architektinnen und Architekten BDA, Verband Privater Bauherren e.V. (VPB), JUNG and Parkett Dietrich. Prize money totalling 15,000 Euro will be awarded. In addition, the VPB will pay each client of an award-winning house a bonus of 1,000 Euro. This does not apply if the client is also the architect of the house. In 2026, HÄUSER will once again award the Interior Prize for the outstanding quality of interior design in cooperation with Parkett Dietrich. The prize is endowed with 2,000 Euro.
The closing date for entries is Monday 5 May 2025, and HÄUSER expects to publish the results of the competition in April 2026. The winners will be officially announced and honoured at an awards ceremony at JUNG Elbgespräche in Hamburg. The best projects will also be presented in an accompanying book.
Detailed information on the conditions of the competition and the entry forms can be found online at www.haeuser-award.de.
